{"title":"Pressotherapy and intermittent pneumatic compression","seoTitle":"Pressotherapy and intermittent pneumatic compression | PES Luxembourg","metaDescription":"Eureduc TP07i 7-chamber pressotherapy: intermittent pneumatic compression used as a venous-lymphatic adjunct in Bascharage.","content":"**Pressotherapy applies intermittent pneumatic compression, chamber after chamber, from the extremity of the limb towards its root, to help venous and lymphatic return. At Pôle Equilibre & Santé, in Bascharage, the [Eureduc](https://www.eureduc.eu/) TP07i (seven chambers) prolongs [manual lymphatic drainage](/bascharage/competence/drainage-lymphatique). This is not a slimming treatment.**\n\n## Seven chambers, distal-to-proximal direction\n\nYou put on compartmented boots or sleeves. They inflate then deflate in sequence, from the foot (or the hand) towards the hip (or the shoulder). The **seven-chamber** TP07i uses a pressure gradient to limit pushing oedema towards the trunk. Compression that is too strong or in the wrong order can displace fluid instead of draining it: the setting is clinical, not that of an aesthetic protocol.\n\nPressure, cycle duration and accessory (leg, arm) are chosen for your case.\n\n## Indications\n\n- lymphoedemas, including after lymph-node dissection or radiotherapy;\n- chronic venous insufficiency and a feeling of heavy legs;\n- lower-limb oedemas in the subacute phase, once an urgent cause has been ruled out;\n- after surgery, when the surgeon allows it;\n- recovery after a long effort, as an adjunct in an athlete.\n\nPressotherapy relieves a heavy limb; it does not repair veins on its own.\n\n## Evidence: an adjunct, not monotherapy\n\nThe 2020 International Society of Lymphology (ISL) consensus places intermittent pneumatic compression as an **adjunct** to complete decongestive therapy (drainage, garments, exercise). The 2020 APTA recommendations on breast-cancer-related lymphoedema go the same way. Combined with manual work, it can reduce volume and improve comfort. Isolated, poorly set, it can push oedema upwards.\n\nOften after manual drainage; sometimes at the end of the session.\n\n## How it goes\n\nLying or semi-sitting, generally **fifteen to twenty-five minutes**. A sensation of rhythmic massage, sometimes a little tight at the end of inflation. Pain, pins and needles, breathlessness or malaise: we lower or we stop.\n\nFrequency: often **once or twice a week** in the intensive phase of a lymphoedema, then maintenance. For heavy legs without established lymphoedema, a few sessions can test the benefit, provided walking, a prescribed garment and venous hygiene are associated.\n\n## Preparation\n\nSoft clothing, clean skin, sometimes a thin stocking under the sleeve. Remove shoes, a tight belt, ankle jewellery. No thick cream or oil just before. Empty the bladder. You do not need to be fasting; avoid a very heavy meal. Bring your garment: we often put it back on **just after**.\n\n## After the session\n\nThe limb is often lighter; transient cutaneous pinkness is ordinary. Driving and sedentary work are possible. Gentle walking is desirable. Put the prescribed garment back on. There is no muscle soreness. A result is judged on comfort and sometimes on a tape measure, not on a shoe size that would change in one session.\n\n## Contraindications\n\nAcute deep-vein thrombosis, a skin infection (erysipelas), cardiac decompensation, chest pain, uncontrolled hypertension according to the context, a large open wound, pressure urticaria. Cancer in treatment is not an automatic contraindication, but the decision is medical. Mention severe neuropathy: excessive pressure might not be perceived.\n\n## Frequently asked questions\n\n<details>\n<summary>Is it unpleasant?</summary>\n\nNo, the pressure stays moderate and is set according to your comfort. Report any discomfort: we adjust immediately. Tightening more does not improve drainage.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Does it make you lose weight?</summary>\n\nNo. The effect is circulatory and draining. It does not act on weight or on cellulite as an aesthetic treatment.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>How long, and how many sessions?</summary>\n\nFifteen to twenty-five minutes per passage, often after manual drainage. The number of sessions follows your condition: an intensive lymphoedema phase, or a few tests for heavy legs, always with garments and activity.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Should I put my stockings back on afterwards?</summary>\n\nYes if a garment has been prescribed. It is what maintains the volume gained. Arrive with your stockings or your sleeve.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Can I combine it with endermologie?</summary>\n\nYes, often: [endermologie](/bascharage/equipement/endermologie) on a fibrosis or a scar, pressotherapy for volume drainage, hands for the rest. The order is decided in the session.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Is a prescription required?</summary>\n\nPhysiotherapy is provided on medical prescription so that it can be reimbursed by the [CNS](https://cns.public.lu/fr/assure/remboursements/prestations-remboursees/prestations-paramedicales/kinesitherapeutes.html). The practice handles the paperwork.
