{"title":"Percussive massage — Theragun PRO","seoTitle":"Percussive massage — Theragun PRO | Physiotherapy PES Luxembourg","metaDescription":"Theragun PRO: short percussive massage for mobility, flexibility or muscle comfort in a physiotherapy session in Bascharage.","content":"**The percussion gun prepares or concludes an exercise: a few minutes on a muscle, not a treatment for tendinopathy. At Pôle Equilibre & Santé, in Bascharage, the [Theragun](https://www.therabody.com/products/theragun-pro) delivers about 2,400 percussions per minute, for an amplitude of about 16 mm. It is a comfort tool, dosed by the physiotherapist.**\n\n## Amplitude and cadence (Theragun)\n\nThe head strikes the muscle at a high cadence (of the order of **2,400/min**, about 40 impacts per second) with a stroke of about **16 mm**, deeper than a surface vibration. The attachments (ball, cone, large, thumb shape) change the contact: large muscle masses or more localised points. We avoid bone, raw joints and acute inflammatory areas.\n\nThis is not a session sold as stand-alone therapy, nor an equivalent of [manual therapy](/bascharage/competence/therapie-manuelle).\n\n## Indications — and what this is not\n\nKonrad et al. (*Journal of Sports Science and Medicine*, 2020) mainly measure an **immediate gain in range**, comparable to a short stretch, without a drop in strength. Sams et al. (*IJSPT*, 2023) confirm this transient effect on flexibility. These works do not show that percussion treats a tendinopathy, nor that it eliminates lactic acid.\n\nUse at the practice:\n\n- warm-up, to gain a few degrees before active work;\n- recovery, for a feeling of release;\n- a muscle spasm, never in place of a loading programme.\n\nA tendon, a ligament or instability are rehabilitated otherwise. [Shock waves](/bascharage/equipement/onde-de-choc), when they are discussed, target another tissue.\n\n## How it goes\n\nOften **two to five minutes** per region. Intensity is adjusted continuously. At the slightest discomfort, we lower or we move. A quarter of an hour on the same muscle brings nothing more and can irritate skin and nerve.\n\n## Preparation\n\nSports clothing; work on the garment or on clean skin, without oil. Remove a necklace and a watch if we pass nearby. You do not need to be fasting.\n\n## After the session\n\nDriving is possible. Delayed muscle soreness is rare; local tenderness for an hour or two is possible. Sport the same evening is generally compatible when percussion has served as a warm-up. Daily home use, without changing training load, sleep or exercises, does not transform a tendinopathy.\n\n## Contraindications and areas to avoid\n\nThe front of the neck, the hollow of the knee, the axilla, the abdomen, suspected phlebitis, a recent fracture, a wound, a tumour, a very inflammatory tendon. Pregnancy: no application on the belly. An implant, a superficial plate, severe osteoporosis: we adapt or we abstain.\n\n## Frequently asked questions\n\n<details>\n<summary>Is it painful?</summary>\n\nThe rapid cadence makes contact rather comfortable. We avoid bony landmarks. At the slightest discomfort, we lower or we move. This is not a pain-tolerance test.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>How long on each muscle?</summary>\n\nTwo to five minutes are generally enough. Longer is not more effective and can irritate.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Is a gun bought in a shop enough?</summary>\n\nIt can relax a muscle. Knowing **when** to use it, **where** and at what power, within a care plan, changes the result — and avoids risk areas.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Can I use it on a tendinitis?</summary>\n\nNot as a treatment. Aggressive percussion on an irritated tendon can worsen it. The tendon is rehabilitated by load; the gun, if at all, on the neighbouring muscle, at low intensity.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Can I drive and go to work afterwards?</summary>\n\nYes. No drowsiness, no gel to wipe off. Local redness fades quickly.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Is a prescription required?</summary>\n\nPercussion sits within a physiotherapy session. Physiotherapy is provided on medical prescription so that it can be reimbursed by the [CNS](https://cns.public.lu/fr/assure/remboursements/prestations-remboursees/prestations-paramedicales/kinesitherapeutes.html). The practice handles the paperwork.
