These very common signs can sometimes be linked to constraints experienced before and during birth. At Pôle Equilibre & Santé, Bascharage, Luxembourg, our osteopaths welcome little ones with gentle and adapted techniques, while respecting paediatric follow-up which remains the benchmark.**\n\n## Why consult an osteopath for a newborn?\n\nEach pregnancy, each birth and each growth is unique, and all these stages influence the development of the infant. Childbirth constitutes one of the first major changes in a baby's life: the transition from a liquid and protective environment to life outside the womb, much less reassuring.\n\nIn the last weeks of pregnancy, the foetus has very little space; the baby's head is in close contact with the maternal pelvis, and the first constraints may appear. During childbirth, the child undergoes strong pressure which sometimes acts on the mobility of the bones of the skull and spine - bones that have not yet fused (the fontanelles). Whether short or long, natural or induced, assisted or not, childbirth can cause functional disturbances, immediate or delayed.\n\n> “Birth can be the first trauma in a child’s life.”\n\nThis is why an early postnatal assessment, in the first days or weeks, is often recommended: the longer you wait, the more difficult it is to correct the asymmetries and the longer treatment may take.\n\n## What signs should alert parents?\n\nSeveral situations may prompt you to seek advice for your baby:\n\n- **Head asymmetry**: flat head or plagiocephaly, flat or rounded forehead, half-closed eye, protruding ear, oedema, or birth with forceps or ventouse\n- **Regurgitations, vomiting**\n- **Difficult childbirth**: coiled cord, breech, caesarean section, difficult passage, prematurity\n- **Digestive disorders**: colic, diarrhoea, constipation, squirming, crying\n- **Torticollis** or difficulty turning the head to one side\n- **Agitation, nervousness, sleep problems, crying, anxiety**\n- **Strabismus** (convergent or divergent)\n- **Sucking or swallowing difficulties**, restrictive oral ties, feeding issues or functional oro-myofacial disorders\n- **Repeated ear infections or rhinitis**\n\n## How does a session with a baby go?\n\nThe techniques used on newborns are **gentle, precise and perfectly adapted** to their fragility: nothing abrupt or forced. The osteopath works by observing the child, often in the arms or near their parent, in a peaceful atmosphere. The session is also a moment of discussion: the practitioner collects the history of the pregnancy and birth, and advises you on good daily postures.\n\n## Is it safe, and does it replace the paediatrician?\n\nThe care of an infant by an osteopath **does not in any way replace the medical monitoring** provided by their paediatrician or any other specialist they may need. Osteopathy complements, never replaces: faced with any unusual or worrying sign, the doctor remains your first contact. Our osteopaths work in this spirit of prudence and complementarity.\n\n## An osteopath trained in paediatrics\n\nAt the clinic, **[Anaïs Mismacque](/bascharage/osteopathe/anais-mismacque)** has completed dedicated training in infant and baby care, notably around sucking and swallowing disorders, restrictive oral ties and functional oro-myofacial disorders. She works alongside paediatric follow-up and, when relevant, with the other professionals involved.\n\n## Frequently asked questions\n\n<details>\n<summary>From what age can we consult?</summary>\n\nFrom the first days of life. An early postnatal assessment is even often recommended, because asymmetries are corrected the more effectively they can be addressed when identified early. The process is detailed on the page [The Consultation](/bascharage/osteopathie/consultation-osteo).\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Does treatment hurt the baby?</summary>\n\nNo. The techniques used on infants are gentle and adapted to their physiology. The session is conducted calmly, often in contact with the parent.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Do I need a prescription?</summary>\n\nNo, you can consult an osteopath directly. The [CNS](https://cns.public.lu/en/assure/refunds/reimbursed-services/paramedical-services/physiotherapists.html) does not reimburse these sessions, but some supplementary health insurers, including CMCM, may contribute towards the cost: check with your insurer.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>How do I make an appointment?</summary>\n\nBook online via [Doctena](https://fr.doctena.lu/cabinet/Pole_Equilibre_Sante_de_Bascharage_Cabinet_d_Osteopathie-405983) or by phone on +352 27 99 42 42.
