Whether you are being treated for chronic lymphoedema or looking for the Renata França method, the approach adapts to you.\n\nOur dedicated site [kine-drainage.lu](https://kine-drainage.lu/) presents in more detail our approach to lymphatic drainage, the situations we treat and practical advice for preparing your appointment.\n\n## Who is it for?\n\nLymphatic drainage can support many situations:\n\n- a primary **lymphoedema** (an insufficiently developed lymphatic network) or secondary lymphoedema (after lymph node dissection, radiotherapy, breast cancer surgery, burn or trauma);\n- a **post-operative** or post-traumatic oedema, particularly after orthopaedic surgery or hand rehabilitation;\n- **heavy legs**, water retention, a feeling of swelling at the end of the day;\n- veno-lymphatic insufficiency and certain circulatory disorders;\n- a need for **wellness and remodelling drainage** with the Renata França method.\n\nDrainage is not indicated in all situations. In the presence of an acute infection (erysipelas), untreated phlebitis, decompensated heart failure or an active, untreated tumour, it may be contraindicated: the initial assessment is precisely there to check this with you and, if needed, with your doctor.\n\n## What is lymphoedema?\n\nLymphoedema is an excess of fluid that stagnates in the tissues because the lymphatic system can no longer drain it. High-molecular-weight molecules accumulate, retain water and the limb swells. Over time, the oedema, at first fluid-based, thickens and becomes fibrotic.\n\nIt is a chronic disease: it cannot be \"cured\" permanently, but it can be controlled very effectively. The goal is twofold — reduce the volume, then maintain this gain over time. The earlier care begins, the simpler and more effective it is.\n\n## An assessment before starting\n\nThe first appointment helps us understand your history, your background and your goals. The physiotherapist assesses the consistency of the oedema (fluid-based or already fibrotic), its location, the quality of the skin and the venous condition. Circumference or volume measurements may be taken to track progress objectively. This assessment is used to build a safe, progressive programme, to identify signs that require medical advice, and to decide which techniques to combine according to your case.\n\n## Goals of care\n\n- **Reduce the volume** of the limb during the intensive initial phase.\n- **Soften the tissues** and limit fibrosis when the oedema is already established.\n- **Relieve heaviness and discomfort** in daily life.\n- **Maintain results** through compression and, if necessary, self-drainage.\n- **Make you independent**: understand your oedema, manage your compression and recognise warning signs.\n\n## What happens during a session?\n\nThe reference treatment for lymphoedema combines three complementary techniques, chosen and dosed according to the consistency of your oedema:\n\n- **Manual lymphatic drainage.** A precise massage, without gliding, that starts above the oedema and progresses in the direction of lymphatic return. The pressure is adapted to the firmness of the tissues.\n- **Compression bandaging.** A layering of rigid and elastic bands which, with each muscle contraction, compresses the oedema and pushes it back. This is currently the most effective technique for reducing volume; a sleeve or stocking then takes over.\n- **[Pressotherapy](/bascharage/equipement/pressotherapie).** A sequential, multi-chamber, adjustable pneumatic compression that extends and amplifies the manual work without ever replacing it.\n\nTreatment begins with an intensive initial phase — this is when most of the reduction in swelling is achieved — followed by a maintenance phase. If your situation requires it, we gradually teach you self-drainage and how to manage your compression: this independence is the key to maintaining results over the long term.\n\n## What does science say?\n\nInternational recommendations converge: it is the **combination** of the three techniques, and not one of them alone, that gives the best results. Research has also clarified good practice — it is the techniques focused on the swollen area that actually reduce infiltration, rather than manoeuvres multiplied at a distance. On fibrotic areas, deeper tissue manoeuvres are used. This rigour, based on evidence, avoids wasting time on techniques with no proven effect.\n\n## What about Renata França drainage?\n\nThe practice also offers the **Renata França method**, a manual drainage renowned for its draining and remodelling effect, with an aesthetic and wellness aim (heavy legs, retention, feeling of lightness). It is performed by a certified practitioner, [Anaïs Mismacque](/bascharage/osteopathe/anais-mismacque), an osteopath at the practice. All information about this service is gathered on our dedicated site [renata-franca.lu](https://renata-franca.lu/).\n\nNot to be confused with the medical treatment of lymphoedema described above: these are two distinct approaches. Renata França drainage is a wellness service, whereas the treatment of lymphoedema falls within physiotherapy on medical prescription.\n\n## In Luxembourg: reimbursement and official framework\n\nFor the treatment of lymphoedema, this care falls within physiotherapy on medical prescription. The conditions for prescription, authorisation and reimbursement depend on your situation and the CNS rules in force. Lymphatic drainage is among the treatments that may benefit from a higher number of sessions per prescription. To find out the applicable steps, see our page [The physiotherapy consultation](/bascharage/kinesitherapie/consultation-kine) or ask the practice for advice.\n\n## When should you seek medical advice quickly?\n\nWarm, painful, spreading redness, fever, sudden pain in a calf with swelling, unusual shortness of breath or a rapid worsening of the oedema require medical advice without delay. In case of emergency (chest pain, malaise, respiratory distress), call **112**. Lymphatic drainage does not replace urgent medical evaluation.\n\n## Your specialists at the practice\n\nAt the practice, manual lymphatic drainage (Leduc method) is notably provided by **[Marie Poncelet](/bascharage/kinesitherapeute/marie-poncelet)** and **[Julien Kune](/bascharage/kinesitherapeute/julien-kune)**, both trained in manual lymphatic drainage, specific bandaging and pressotherapy. For Renata França drainage, the team will direct you to **[Anaïs Mismacque](/bascharage/osteopathe/anais-mismacque)**.\n\n## Frequently asked questions\n\n<details>\n<summary>Do I need a prescription?</summary>\n\nFor the treatment of lymphoedema, yes: physiotherapy is carried out on medical prescription to be reimbursed by the CNS, according to the conditions in force, and the practice supports you with the steps. The full process is explained on the page [The physiotherapy consultation](/bascharage/kinesitherapie/consultation-kine). Renata França drainage, with a wellness aim, is a separate service.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Can pressotherapy replace manual drainage?</summary>\n\nNo, they complement each other. [Pressotherapy](/bascharage/equipement/pressotherapie) prepares and extends the work, manual drainage refines and targets the areas of blockage. It is their combination, with compression, that makes the treatment effective. Each session is adjusted to the state of your oedema.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Can lymphoedema really be stabilised?</summary>\n\nYes. It is a chronic disease, but well-conducted treatment strongly reduces the volume, then maintenance — daily compression, self-drainage, follow-up — makes it possible to keep this benefit. Regularity and your involvement are decisive.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>What is the difference with Renata França drainage?</summary>\n\nMedical drainage of lymphoedema aims to reduce and control a pathological oedema, on prescription. The [Renata França method](https://renata-franca.lu/) is a manual drainage with an aesthetic and wellness aim, performed at the practice by [Anaïs Mismacque](/bascharage/osteopathe/anais-mismacque). These are two distinct services, with different goals.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Is drainage painful?</summary>\n\nNo. Manual lymphatic drainage uses gentle pressure, adapted to the firmness of the tissues. On fibrotic areas, some deeper manoeuvres may be a little firmer, but the technique always remains adjusted to your comfort and explained beforehand.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Are there situations where drainage is not advised?</summary>\n\nYes. In case of acute infection (erysipelas), untreated phlebitis, decompensated heart failure or an active, untreated tumour, drainage may be contraindicated. The initial assessment makes it possible to check this and, if necessary, to discuss it with your doctor before starting.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>How do I book an appointment?</summary>\n\nYou can [book online](https://fr.doctena.lu/cabinet/Pole_Equilibre_Sante-281318) or call the Bascharage practice on [+352 26 65 28 42](tel:+35226652842). If you are unsure about the urgency of your symptoms, call 112 rather than waiting for an appointment.\n\n</details>\n\n## Further reading\n\n- [kine-drainage.lu](https://kine-drainage.lu/) — our site dedicated to lymphatic drainage\n- [Pressotherapy](/bascharage/equipement/pressotherapie) — sequential pneumatic compression in the service of drainage\n- [renata-franca.lu](https://renata-franca.lu/) — our site dedicated to Renata França drainage\n- [Marie Poncelet](/bascharage/kinesitherapeute/marie-poncelet) — lymphatic drainage, Leduc method\n- [Julien Kune](/bascharage/kinesitherapeute/julien-kune) — lymphatic drainage, Leduc method\n- [Anaïs Mismacque](/bascharage/osteopathe/anais-mismacque) — certified Renata França method practitioner\n- [The physiotherapy consultation](/bascharage/kinesitherapie/consultation-kine) — prescription, reimbursement and process\n","seoTitle":"Lymphatic drainage in Luxembourg | Pôle Equilibre & Santé Bascharage","metaDescription":"Manual lymphatic drainage in Luxembourg: lymphoedema, heavy legs, oedema after surgery or cancer.
