{"title":"The Physiotherapy Consultation","image":"/images/consultation-kine-hero.jpg","content":"**In Luxembourg, a physiotherapy consultation takes place with a medical prescription: the doctor prescribes the treatment, the CNS approves coverage (reimbursement at 70%, or even 100% in some cases), then the physiotherapist carries out an initial assessment before starting the sessions.** At the Pôle Equilibre & Santé practice in Bascharage, our team handles the administrative formalities for you.\n\n## How do I obtain a physiotherapy prescription?\n\nThe prescription is issued using a **standardised physiotherapy prescription**, specifying the type of treatment, the number of sessions and their frequency.\n\nThe maximum number of sessions covered per prescription depends on the type of treatment:\n\n- **8 sessions** for a common condition (exception: up to **24 sessions** for [manual lymphatic drainage](/bascharage/competence/drainage-lymphatique), procedures ZK16 and ZK17)\n- **64 sessions** for a serious condition (list defined in Annex G of the CNS statutes: progressive scoliosis, polyarthritis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, hemiplegia, lymphoedema after lymph node dissection…, reproduced on the back of the prescription)\n- **16 sessions** for [post-surgical rehabilitation](/bascharage/competence/reeducation-orthopedique)\n\nAny condition not included in the Annex G list — other than post-surgical rehabilitation — is considered common.\n\n**Foreign prescriptions** are accepted if they include all compulsory information from the standardised prescription and are written in French, German or English; in any other language, they are returned by the CNS.\n\n## What are the practical steps?\n\nIn 4 steps — and the practice treats the essentials:\n\n1. **You make an appointment** with the physiotherapist of your choice within **31 days** of the prescription being issued, and hand it in at the first session.\n2. **The practice sends the prescription** to the CNS via its IT system for approval (within the same 31-day period).\n3. **The CNS issues a coverage certificate**: maximum treatment duration, number of sessions and coverage rate.\n4. **At the end of treatment**, you only pay the portion remaining at your expense.\n\n**Be mindful of the deadlines**: sessions carried out more than **3 months** after the prescription date are no longer covered. This period is extended to **12 months** for a serious condition under Annex G, and to **4 months** for procedures prescribed after surgery of the musculoskeletal system.\n\n## At what rate are sessions reimbursed?\n\nThe CNS coverage rate is set at **70%**. It rises to **100%** in several cases:\n\n- Your child is **under 18 years old** on the prescription date\n- You have a **serious condition** under Annex G\n- Procedures are prescribed **after surgery on the musculoskeletal system** (maximum 32 sessions, if the prescription is issued within 4 months of surgery and the procedures are performed within 4 months after approval)\n- For **assessments** included in the physiotherapists' schedule of fees\n\nWith the **third-party payment system**, you only pay the portion remaining at your expense at the practice: we bill the health-insurance share directly to the CNS. This system applies when the approval request comes from a physiotherapist established in Luxembourg — which is our case.\n\n## How do the sessions take place?\n\nPhysiotherapy services are **individual**: the physiotherapist devotes **at least 20 minutes personally and exclusively** to you and may not treat several patients simultaneously — this is a quality standard set by the CNS.\n\nAt the Pôle Equilibre & Santé practice, we go further: **our sessions last 30 minutes**, whereas many practices stick to the minimum. Our patients often stay longer still to complement their session with **exercises using our [rehabilitation facilities](/bascharage/equipement)**, **physiotherapy modalities** or **[pneumatic compression therapy](/bascharage/equipement/pressotherapie)**.\n\nThe first consultation starts with a **physiotherapy assessment and diagnosis**: assessment of your condition (pain, mobility, strength, posture), setting goals and selecting suitable procedures. The frequency of sessions and techniques can then be adapted in agreement with your doctor, according to how your condition progresses:\n\n- **Massage** — manual manipulation of soft tissues, effective in reducing inflammation and relieving muscular tension and stiffness\n- **[Manual lymphatic drainage](/bascharage/competence/drainage-lymphatique)** — highly effective against fluid retention (oedema) after an injury, operation or illness\n- **Exercises and stretching** — current scientific evidence shows that you should move as much as possible: immobilisation weakens muscles and delays healing. Simple convenience or patient preference is not enough: the doctor must certify that your state of health (reduced mobility, convalescence, inability to travel…) justifies the physiotherapist coming to your home. \nHow long do I have to get my prescription approved?\n\nApproval must be requested from the CNS within 31 days of the prescription date. \nWhat happens if I cancel late or arrive late?\n\nIf you give less than 24 hours' notice or arrive more than 15 minutes late, the physiotherapist may charge a fee (code ZCP1), which is not reimbursed by health insurance, provided you have been informed of the rules in advance.\n\n

\nI am a cross-border worker: how am I reimbursed?\n\nIf you receive treatment in your country of residence, it is reimbursed exclusively by your local health fund, according to its own rates and conditions. Treatment received in Luxembourg, such as at our practice, falls under the CNS.\n\n
