{"title":"Andullation: mechanical vibration and infrared heat","seoTitle":"Andullation: mechanical vibration and infrared heat | PES Luxembourg","metaDescription":"HHP andullation: mechanical vibration and infrared heat for comfort and relaxation, as an adjunct to physiotherapy in Bascharage.","content":"**Andullation (HHP) is a mattress that combines a mechanical vibration (about 5–40 Hz) and infrared heat. Lying down, dressed, you have no effort to provide. At Pôle Equilibre & Santé, in Bascharage, it is a comfort and relaxation tool — it does not repair a disc or osteoarthritis.**\n\n## Vibration and heat, without exercise\n\nThe HHP device produces a vibratory wave along the body, associated with infrared heat. The frequencies usually described sit around **5 to 40 Hz**. The mechanisms invoked (sensory modulation of pain, muscle release, vasodilatation) are those, known, of [thermotherapy](/bascharage/equipement/thermotherapie) and of vibrations. The device does not act on a precise organ. No particular breathing instruction.\n\nThis is not an equivalent of localised [percussion](/bascharage/equipement/percussion), nor a treatment for a hernia, sciatica or osteoarthritis.\n\n## Comfort indications\n\nChronic back pain, tensions, fatigue, people for whom a firmer massage is poorly tolerated. A calm time before or after exercises, when relaxation truly serves the session.\n\nThis is not a slimming bed, nor a single treatment of a joint or disc pathology.\n\n## Evidence: a study without a control group\n\nParras-Moltó and Ribas-Serna (*Dose-Response*, 2019) observed, after **five 30-minute sessions**, a drop in perceived pain, an improvement in well-being, a slight decrease in blood pressure and in leg volume. **There was no control group.** These results do not allow one to conclude a specific effect superior to lying rest. We do not over-interpret them.\n\nThere is no corpus of robust trials comparable to that of exercise. Andullation is presented as a **comfort tool**. If pain or stiffness change nothing after a few trials, we stop the device.\n\n## How it goes\n\nDressed (soft clothing, without a belt that is too tight or objects in the pockets). Lying down, progressive heat, diffuse vibrations. A sensation close to a gentle massage. Duration often **15 to 25 minutes**. We adapt if discomfort, nausea or heat that is too strong.\n\n## Preparation\n\nClean skin, no thick cream. Mention pregnancy, thrombosis, an infection, a wound, a pacemaker, epilepsy, a progressing tumour. If lying on the back wakes the back, we wedge a cushion or we choose another tool.\n\n## After the session\n\nUsual activities are generally possible. Slight drowsiness is possible: wait to be well awake before driving. Maximal sport on a still-unstable lesion is not indicated.\n\n## Contraindications\n\nPregnancy, a recent thrombosis or phlebitis, a febrile infection, a wound or cutaneous inflammation, a pacemaker or an electronic implant (case by case), poorly controlled epilepsy, a recent haemorrhage, a progressing tumour according to medical advice, a major sensory disorder, very hot acute joint inflammation.\n\n## Frequently asked questions\n\n<details>\n<summary>Is it painful?</summary>\n\nNo. Gentle vibrations and heat. We adapt immediately if discomfort, nausea or heat that is too vivid appears.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Does it replace my rehabilitation?</summary>\n\nNo. Exercises and manual therapy remain the heart. Andullation sometimes frames them, at the start or at the end of the session.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>How long does a session last, and at what rhythm?</summary>\n\nOften 15 to 25 minutes. This is not a compulsory daily care. We use it when relaxation truly serves the work of the day.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Are there contraindications?</summary>\n\nPregnancy, a recent thrombosis, an infection, a wound, certain electronic implants, very hot acute inflammation: say so at the assessment. We then choose another means, or we abstain.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>How should I dress? Is a shower needed afterwards?</summary>\n\nCome dressed comfortably. No need for sportswear or a shower: you do not sweat as in effort. Remove a tight belt and objects from the pockets.\n\n</details>\n\n<details>\n<summary>Is it reimbursed?</summary>\n\nPhysiotherapy is provided on medical prescription so that it can be reimbursed by the [CNS](https://cns.public.lu/fr/assure/remboursements/prestations-remboursees/prestations-paramedicales/kinesitherapeutes.html). The practice handles the paperwork.
